Beyond Pragmatism

The entrenchment of pluralism in western institutions seems insurmountable. Popular wisdom suggests that Christian relevance requires working for small gains within the existing system and standing strongly for one or two non-negotiable social issues. This is an understandable and perhaps necessary response.

The late Neil Postman spoke of the feelings of helplessness and apathy that result from constantly receiving information about which one can do very little. He also observed that the free-flow of information is especially problematic when disseminated through television. The thematic disconnection between news reports, the musical scores to which they are set, and the “flickering image” speed reduce the “news” to a “show” and current events to a meaningless connection of “stories.” The war in Iraq is about as a real and important as the two-for-one sale at Macy’s.
